NCAA volleyball: MACtion, Horizon, Southland results; 14-1 EIU wins; AVCA poll

In this NCAA report, we have Tuesday’s NCAA Division I women’s volleyball recaps, a look at Wednesday’s schedule and AVCA news.

There are just 13 matches on Wednesday’s schedule, including a key battle between ranked SEC teams.

The SEC’s Arkansas, the No. 14 team in the VolleyballMag.com Super 16 Media Poll, is home for AVCA No. 24 Auburn. The No. 4 team in the VBM Poll, Florida, plays host to Texas A&M.

In the Big Ten, top-ranked an unbeaten Wisconsin at Ohio State, which holds the No. 22 spot in the AVCA Poll. Also in the B1G, Maryland is at Rutgers.

The No. 5 team in the VBM Poll, Louisville, has an ACC match at Notre Dame.

AVCA No. 19 Kansas has a Big 12 match at West Virginia.

The Citadel, unbeaten at 14-0, plays host to Western Carolina in the Southern Conference.

AVCA: The AVCA Division I Women’s Volleyball Poll had a little movement this week. Stanford, now No. 3, and Florida, now No. 4, traded places. Iowa State and Western Kentucky, which were tied for No. 25, both won both their matches but dropped out and unbeaten Arizona State moved in.

Also, the AVCA national player of the week is SMU’s Emma Clothier, the graduate transfer from Florida State. Clothier had 42 kills in three victories. We would be remiss in not noting that Evansville junior Giulia Cardona had 26 kills in a three-set loss to Murray State and then 36 kills in a four-set win over Belmont, an average of 8.8 kills per set. 

Tulsa’s Kayley Cassaday leads the NCAA with 283 kills, Cardona is second with 261, and Dayton’s Lexi Almodovar has 252. Cardona leads at 5.67/set.

MACTION: The Mid-American Conference is down to just four teams unbeaten in league play, which includes Western Michigan (12-2, 2-0). Look for a feature about the Broncos on Thursday.

Tuesday, Central Michigan (7-8, 1-2) won in five at Eastern Michigan (2-13, 0-3) as Lauren Schrock had 19 kills in the 25-15, 24-26, 22-25, 25-21, 18-16 victory. Claire Ammeraal had 42 assists, 12 kills, two aces, three blocks and 22 digs and Linnea Willer had 11 kills, three blocks and a dig. Aly Gurtiza had 22 digs, six assists and a career-high five aces. EMU’s Callie Minshew had 25 kills, four assists, two solo blocks and 21 digs. Ava Siefke had 16 kills, three assists and 16 digs, and Hannah Howard had 20 digs, five assists and three aces … Also in the MAC, Ohio (7-8, 2-1) swept visiting Kent State (4-10, 0-3). Caitlin O’Farrell led the Bobcats with 14 kills in 18 errorless attacks to hit .778 and had an assist and a block. Sam Steele had 12 digs, four assists and four aces.

HORIZON LEAGUE: Oakland (9-7, 3-1) won 16-25, 25-18, 19-25, 25-17, 15-13 at IUPUI (6-9, 0-4) as Gentry Brown had 13 kills and three teammates had seven each, including Anika Prisby, who had no errors in 17 attacks and four blocks, two solo … Cleveland State (9-6, 3-1) beat visiting Purdue Fort Wayne (5-11,0-4) in four. Liberty Torres had 16 kills, five digs and a block. Karly Klaer had four kills, 31 assists, an ace, 15 digs and three blocks … Northern Kentucky (7-7, 2-1) swept at Robert Morris (4-11, 1-3) as Abby Kanakry and Joy Banks had 12 kills each and Ava Hoying had 10. Anna Burke had 20 digs, six assist and two aces … Wright State (7-7, 3-0) swept at Youngstown State (6-9, 1-3) as eight Raiders had kills, eight by Reilly Zegunis in 13 errorless attacks. She had a dig and four blocks, two solo.

SOUTHLAND:  Houston Christian (8-7, 3-0) swept at Lamar (0-14, 0-3) as Sara Arroyo had 13 kills and hit .407 … McNeese (5-11, 3-0) kept pace with a sweep over visiting Nicholls (2-11, 0-3) Kayla Wilson had 12 kills and Carissa Chainey and McKenzie Moore had 11 each. Moore had one error in 16 attacks … Southeastern Louisiana (12-4, 3-1) swept visiting New Orleans (2-12, 0-3) as Kailin Newsome had 12 kills, an assist, three aces and 13 digs … Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (6-8, 1-1) hit .376 and swept at UIW (8-6, 0-2). Kyndal Payne had 21 kills, hit .486 and had seven dig and two blocks, one solo. Rylee Achtzehn had 13 kills with one error in 22 attacks … Texas A&M-Commerce (6-10, 2-1) beat visiting Northwestern State (7-8, 3-1) in five. Kitana Tufffuli had 19 kills, eight digs and a block. Jade Smith had 27 digs and three assists and Reese Fetty had eight kills, an assist, an ace, 23 digs and a block.

AROUND THE NATION: Eastern Illinois improved to 14-1 overall, 4-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference, with its four-set win at Southern Indiana (6-9, 2-2). Natalie Mitchem led with 14 kills, Giovana Larregui Lopez had 12 and three aces, and Kaitlyn Flynn had 10 kills. Christina Martinez Mundo had 27 digs, six assists and an ace … 

In the Mountain West, Fresno State (8-6, 2-1) won in five at Nevada (4-10, 0-3). Addison Haluska had 16 kills, an assist, an ace, seven digs and five blocks, and Jenna Legault had 15 kills, a dig and two blocks, one solo. Kasey Purry had 10 blocks, one solo and setter Brooke Cowie had 10 blocks to go with a kill, 41 assists, three aces and 14 digs … 

In the ASUN, North Florida (7-9, 1-2) beat visiting Jacksonville State (3-12, 0-3) in four. Kailey McKnight had 15 kills, a block and 10 digs … 

In the SWAC, Grambling beat Texas Southern in four … Colgate (11-4) of the Patriot League hit .355 and swept at Binghamton (6-8) of America East. Abby Shadwick had 12 kills with no errors in 23 attacks, an ace and 10 digs.
